High Speed Sports Photography

Shooting high speed action requires a fast lens and a fast eye. This is especially true of dusty environments (like autocross) and ball-based games like jai alai. In water sport events, such as Dragonboat Races, reflects from the water and splashing high speed movements are a challenge that pays off when I’m able to capture [...]

Who needs a legal binding union to have an excuse for beautiful wedding photos? I recently was asked to photograph same-sex (and a few traditional) couples for the July Creative Loafing Gay Wedding issue. I shot over 70 portraits (along with over 600 shots of the event).

Photography: Low light fire photography at L’Olivier

Recently, I was asked by L’Olivier Cabaret to come and shoot a night photoset of their fire dancing performance. This presents a special challenge to a photographer being that I was shooting in a low light environment with rapidly moving light sources (the fire) with a very fast action sequence.

Photography: Insect Closeups

Nature has always fascinated me. My right arm is covered in a tattoo of ants marching from M. C. Escher’s Mobius Strip. I often try to get close up photos of different creatures and the smallest of them are the most interesting to capture.

These photos were mostly taken with a 70-300mm canon F/4.

Photography: The Muse

A muse is someone or something that brings incredibly inspiration. Often this inspiration is at the cost of catering to the muse, but sometimes, as in the case of my beautiful wife Kara, any cost pays dividends in inspiration that can not compare.

Here’s a few shots of Kara, many taken in natural light and as ISO200 equivalent, giving her the warm glow that I see when looking at her.

Photography: Food Photos

One of the things I love about running MyTampaLife is the amount of great local restaurants I get to frequent. The great food comes at the price of lugging a full SLR setup with me and all the strange looks I get from other patrons, but it gives me a chance to photograph some of the most enticing food in the Tampa Bay Area. Several of the restaurants I’ve photographed in have solicited me later to come back and shoot photos for their menus or for promotions.

Photography: Capturing the curiosity of dogs

I’m a dog lover, through and through. My wife and I have taken to rescuing chihuahuas and other small dogs that have been abused, neglected and mistreated. We currently have three in our care that have warmed my heart, and inspired me to take better photos.

Here’s some photos I took of the curious nature of dogs. Some, like our white applehead Belle, are intimidated by the camera but eventually warm up to it.
